There are so many opportunities to study photography, whether you are looking for an undergraduate or postgraduate course or a day class to do in your free time, all over the UK universities and independent companies offer something for everyone.
Undergraduate and postgraduate study
Across the UK there are 279 undergraduate photography courses offered by around 114 universities and colleges and 56 postgraduate courses at 43 universities. These can range from distance learning too full time courses as well as the type of photography students can study.
The University for the Creative Arts offers five different undergraduate photography courses ranging in both length of the course and style of photography. With options to do a foundation year as well as distance learning allowing for work to be done online, the university offers a course length suitable for everyone. The university also offers courses in fashion photography to more general and wide spread photography so students can experiment with different styles and tones over three to four years.
East Sussex College provide a three year full time Visual Communication: Photography course. It allows students to develop their practical whilst learning contextual importance in a diverse range of environments and media. Students are able to explore both traditional and more contemporary styles of photography.
Leeds Arts University offer a masters photography course that can be done over one year full time or two years as a part time student. Students are encouraged to experiment whilst finding an approach to uncover an audience as a key part of a sustainable practice.
Kingston University present a seventeen month masters course with both practical and theory elements to it. Students develop a body of work through practice-led research in forms including analogue, digital and still image. The course culminates in final exhibition, showcasing research, process and a final product, as well as how students place their work in a wider setting of both photography and contemporary art.
Photography classes
There are hundreds of independent photography classes all over the UK for people who are looking for a one of class in a particular area of photography or weekly sessions for those who cannot do a full time or part time course.
Going Digital has workshops in one hundred and twenty venues. With different tutors in every location Going Digital offer classes on subjects from getting comfortable using a camera to capturing photos of wildlife, even giving students free loan cameras for the workshop so that they are widely available to everyone not just those who have already got cameras.
Alan Ranger Photography offers a five week beginner’s class teaching student’s digital photography basics and Lightroom basics course. With a flexible option tailored to the individual the classes can be taken as a group of weekly classes in the evening or even one to one sessions to suit a student’s daily life.
Alternatives
As well as courses and classes there are photography internships and apprenticeships all over the UK from independent photographers and photography companies to different branches of the British military as a civilian role.
