Kinds of Photography...

Updated: Mar 6, 2020

There are different styles of photography from product to paparazzi, the latter a form you may wish to avoid. This is a breakdown of some of my favourite styles and why I think they produce some of the best photographs.

Whilst my speciality is landscape and urban photography I love looking at and trying different styles, whether it is something I can experiment with in the near future or a style I can only look at, these are some of my favourite photography genres.

Wedding

Wedding photography is a stunning and intimate form of photography, it offers a mix of portrait and event photography in a variety of different settings. A consuming form of photography as it is fast paced and photographers have to be constantly on their feet to capture every moment of the couples special day and often on the first take, as there are few opportunities to get a second chance at the perfect shot.

Wedding photographers are often the most flexible photographers able to adapt to different situations and locations, with lighting changes and the possibilities of weather disasters. Wedding photographers find the beauty and spontaneity of the day capturing both posed and candid shots, so they can be the most versatile photographers, adjusting to the detailed shots of an intimate moment between the bride and groom or a quick capture of dancing at the reception.

Fashion

Fashion photography is a high end, high class form of photography. It is one of the more difficult styles of photography to enter as it is high competitive and considered a more glamorous form of photography. Working from runways to magazine shoots, it gives photographers the chance to do one-to-one photo shoots and more event or documentation style photography, fashion photography offers the chance to travel to capture changing fashions all over the world.

Fashion photography is a team based form with different people playing a role behind the scenes of every shoot. Fashion photography is a demanding genre with the need for each shot to look stylistically perfect and cohesive to each individual publication and season.

Aerial

A newer style of photography due to modern technology, aerial shots are visually dramatic and offer a new perspective of landscape and urban photography. Whilst aerial photos have been taken for a long time, with the development of drones more photographers are able to try and get aerial shots without the need of a plane or helicopter. Aerial photography is now becoming more commonly used in advertising and even wedding photography as the shots offer a unique perspective on everyday sights.

Photojournalism

Photojournalism is the perfect way to stay up to date on events happening all over the world. Photographers are able to capture anything from political protests, war zones or immigration, photojournalists capture shots for newspapers and online articles to help enhance or explain the article. A type of documentary photography it varies from portraiture to landscape allowing photographers to capture a wide range of images.
